Diplomacy is meaningless. Even if you have a perfect relationship with your ally, he/she won’t help you and will actually even attack you unexpectedly. The computer players will send random marauders attack you for no reason. If you kill an enemy army attacking your land, diplomatic relationships drop, even though you were defending yourself.
